The Alpha Centura Science Fiction Society ("Alpha" for short) is a science fiction society that was formed in 1976. The society features guest speakers, watching classically good (or heckling bad) SF movies, reviewing books, movies and TV shows, trading SF books, AFFUN (a role-playing of an interstellar United Nation that pre-dates Babylon 5 by many years), group field trips, and general socializing. The society first started out as a Star Trek club. In the mid-1990s, it developed into a general science fiction society. The command structure is still that of a starship with a captain, a science officer, a security officer, and a communication officer. The society puts out it's own fanzine called "The Communicator." The society meets the first Friday of each month in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Its current leader is Starfly who started out in science fiction fandom in the 1970s in Huntington, West Virginia. Starfly was a member of MUSF society during the early eighties until around 1987, when she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Shortly after moving to Albuquerque, Starfly became a Alpha Centurion. Members of Alpha Centura are called Alpha Centurions. Dues for the society during 2006 are $1 per meeting or $10 per year.
